Illegal immigrants (Maltese: klandestini) are a major problem in Malta as many illegals come from Africa using the Malta as a gateway to mainland Europe.[1][2]
The Maltese government has complained often to the European Union but they are not given enough assistance with the problem.[3] The Armed Forces of Malta detain illegal immigrants in several refugee camps on Malta, most notably those near Ħal Far and Albert Town.
Most of these illegal immigrants from Africa and the Middle East throw their passports in the sea and this makes it difficult and laborious for the authorities to verify them. Around half of them have no right to be there, and yet they try to remain. Some of them have over periods of time caused trouble in neighbourhoods, especially at Marsa and Birzebbuga. The situation has quieted down over the years and now there are around 5,000 people seeking asylum, or have some form of asylum, as well as people with rejected status.
There are also illegal immigrants who remain in Malta on expired visas, mainly East European non-EU countries and Asiatics. The Maltese are also concerned about such situation.
