History

2008–2009: Beginnings

Christian started his career as a rapper and entertainer under the name of "MTV Riff Raff" on Myspace, YouTube and WorldStarHipHop in late 2008, releasing songs, freestyle-videos, and sketch clips, which showcased his talent slapstick and performance art.

He was a contestant on the 2009 MTV reality show From G's to Gents. Though he was eliminated from the series on the second episode, he left an impression on viewers through his extravagant way of dressing and the MTV logo tattooed on his neck. The latter enabled him to publicize his career by legally using the "MTV" in his name.

The same year actor, comedian and rapper Simon Rex contacted Christian after watching one of his freestyle videos in which he revealed his phone number. The two became friends and recorded as Riff Raff and Dirt Nasty. Christian received further attention when the duo became a trio including comedian and rapper Andy Milonakis.

2010–2012: SODMG, Mad Decent, Various mixtapes

Beginning in 2010, Riff Raff started releasing music videos shot in an increasingly professional manner that furthered the artist's internet fame. Those include songs like "Juice", "Jose Canseco",[7] or "Marc Jacobs".[8] In 2011, Riff Raff got signed to Soulja Boy's label S.O.D. Money Gang Inc..[9] He dropped the "MTV"-prefix from his name and switched it for the acronym "SODMG".

Some time before the official split Riff Raff affiliated with producers such as Diplo and Harry Fraud, as well as with rapper Action Bronson. The song done with Fraud and Bronson, "Bird on a Wire,"[10] generated quite a hype and hit the one million plays-mark in roughly two months. However because of the sudden termination of Riff Raff's original YouTube-account by YouTube, "Bird on a Wire" and its play-count disappeared. The account was apparently closed due to infringment of user-agreement terms. The most notable videos have so far been re-uploaded.[citation needed] "Bird on a Wire" was listed as the 27th best song of 2012 by Complex Music.[11]

The later signing with Diplo's label Mad Decent marks the latest stepping stone in Riff Raff's career. His current official YouTube-account, opened in March 2012 and featuring songs like "Larry Bird",[3] "Time"[12] and the Chief Keef feature "Cuz My Gear",[13] has generated about 170 million video-views so far. In June 2012 Riff Raff released the Summer of Surf mixtape.[14] He released the album, The Golden Alien, in July 2012.[15] The Birth of an Icon mixtape was released in August 2012.[16] It was listed by Stereogum as their "Mixtape of the Week."[17]

In June 2012, Riff Raff released a video entitled "Versace Python (Freestyle)"[18] announcing the released date of his debut album Castles Around My Heart as August 21, 2013, it was pushed back definitely and retitled BiRTH OF AN iCON. Riff Raff is also working with Diplo in a collaborative album tentative titled Jody Highroller with confirmed guests Mystikal and Action Bronson.

2013: Neon Icon

In February 12, 2013, Riff Raff took to twitter to reveal upcoming collaborations with rappers Drake and ASAP Rocky, set to appear in his upcoming major label debut album Neon Icon, uploading single photos to Instagram with both rappers respectively. Also revealed that the collaboration track with Rocky has a music video in the works set to be released in June 2013.[19] His second studio album is due out during the third quarter of 2013.[20] On March 10, 2013 Riff Raff announced that his major label debut, Neon Icon will feature Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, ASAP Rocky, YG, Snoop Dogg, Future and Drake.[21] The first single is titled "Hart Full of Pain" featuring Drake and produced by Noah "40" Shebib.[22]
